The objectives of the study are 1) to analyze the relevance of the exercises
as written in “English on Sky†published by Erlangga and the syllabus of he 2006
curriculum, 2) to know the direction of exercises as written in the textbook
“English on Skyâ€, 3) to find out the example of presented exercises as written in
the textbook “English on Skyâ€.
The researcher used a descriptive qualitative to analyze the writing
exercises in this study. The researcher analyses and interprets the writing
exercises of English textbook entitled “English on Sky†for eighth grade students
for junior high school. In collecting the data, the researcher uses two steps; (1)
there are selecting the textbook “English on Skyâ€, (2) selecting the writing
exercises in “English on Sky†textbook. The researcher took four steps to analyze
the data. There are selecting, comparing, categorizing and interpreting.
The result of the research showed that there were 78 writing exercises in
the textbook. There were 68 of writing exercises which are relevant to the syllabus
and 10 of writing exercises are not relevant to the syllabus. Most of the directions
of writing exercises relevant to the syllabus are clear. Meanwhile, 2 out of them
are included as unclear directions. There were 41 writing exercises which relevant
to the syllabus completed by examples. There were 37 writing exercises which are
not completed by examples.
In conclusion, most of the writing exercises in “English on Sky†are
relevant with the syllabus of the 2006 curriculum, most of the direction are clear,
and many exercises in “English on Sky†without an example. Following the
conclusion, one of the suggestions is the teachers can choose the “English on Skyâ€
textbook as the reference to English teaching in Junior High School. They should
give the examples from the other sources to improve the students in writing skill.
